Thursday in Roskilde

August 18th, 2016

Thursday we were up and out early to drive the hour to Roskilde where there is a fantastic museum dedicated to Viking ships and Viking age culture. We had a fantastic time trying out Viking age crafts and looking at the restored Viking long boats.

One thing that has been interesting is to see how Pokemon has really taken off all over.

After lunch at a hotdog stand we headed up to the Cathedral, the cathedral in Roskilde is the one where nearly all the monarchs of Denmark are buried and has a ton of history we spent a good couple of hours taking it all in.

After the cathedral, Knut and Nina headed off back to the summer house while the rest of us decided to head to a cafe to wait for Signe to get back from her office. We had a great time playing in the little court yard running around with AJ and Joshua. Then the walk back to the car in the rain to round the day out.

Wednesday Annebjerg Forest

August 12th, 2016

Wednesday was our day trip to take a hike in the Annebjerg forest and then we had been invited to dinner at Nina’s cousin’s Summer house. Beech tree forest are a special pleasure for Karen and we had real fun walking with the whole Dale clan.

We took a break after the hike to grab some coffee and snacks and the nearby cafe, Denmark really doesn’t disappoint with the big sky and ocean views.

Then over to Eva’s summer house for a great Danish dinner. We’ve been there before and it is a wonderful place and fantastic to see Nina’s cousins again.

Tuesday at Frilandsmuseet

August 12th, 2016

After our typical slow morning, the four of us set out to visit the Danish national Frilandsmuseet, which is an open air museum of houses that have been collected from all around Denmark. The older being several hundred years old. Karen and I have been here before but it was Emma and Lizzie’s first trip.

Many of the homes have been set up with furniture and implements to make them look lived in. It’s really amazing to walk into a house that looks like the family just stepped out.

Monday at the Beach

August 11th, 2016

We slept in Monday but after more delicious Danish pastries we decided to head out to a sandy beach about 15 minutes away. The beach had some large dunes protecting the little parking lot and the ice cream stand. As we started to walk over the dunes I walked next to Lizzie and whispered to her . . . she lagged behind as the rest of the Dales headed up and over. We found a nice spot out of the wind to drop our stuff and got ready to head down to the water. As everyone was about ready to get wet, Lizzie suddenly appeared having stealthily went to get us hotdogs! This moved the glimme family nearly even with the Dales on hotdog consumption, even with Thomas’s head start from being in the country several days ahead of us.

We had a great time swimming in the smallish waves, the water being much warmer than we were used to. We bounce and swam for 30 minutes or so having a great time. We headed back up the beach and Lizzie went off to get ice cream for the group. Sitting on the beach munching on ice cream. 🙂

Back home for dinner and our evening walk out to the point to watch the sunset.

After we got back we broke out the new game that we had picked up and Karen, Thomas, Grace and I stayed up late playing. Thomas won. 🙁

The 50th

August 6th, 2016

Sunday was that day of the Knut and Nina’s party for all of us to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We slept in and then spent the morning getting ready to head over to the restaurant and inn where they had reserved the group room. In Denmark these types of events are typically big, but Knut and Nina had in mind to have a bit smaller party that wasn’t focused on their anniversary, but we had other ideas. First we had a video from Karen’s cousin Signe who got stuck in Paris due to an Air France strike, fortunately she was able to record her speech and send it to me, of course this meant that I was running around trying to get on wifi and splice the video back together. Then there was the slide show that I put together and we wrapped up with everyone singing a song that Karen wrote to commemorate the occasion. It was a fantastic party and so much fun to see lots of Knut and Nina’s friends.

As the party wound down it started to rain, Lizzie and some of the other kids ran around enjoying the spitting rain. We headed back to the beach house to relax and recover. The patchy rain continued and as the sun got lower in the sky the strongest rainbow I have ever seen developed we all ran outside and danced.

We had some snacks and then took a beautiful walk to the old quarry as the sun set.

Beach House in Klint

August 6th, 2016

After a nice breakfast in the hotel cafeteria we headed to the airport to pick up our rental car. Apparent there was an issue with the the train tracks and we were diverted in to the metro, this involved quite a bit of rerouting on our part and a couple of station switches, but we made it with out too much trouble and got in line to pick up our car.

One hour later! We final had our car, seriously we waited in line for an hour, nothing wrong just not enough counter help, kinda crazy. Once in the car we were on hour way! The drive to the beach house the we were staying at took about an hour and a half, beautifully country side flew by while Emma and Lizzie dozed in the back seat. The place that Nina and Knut rented for us is out at the end of the road by the little harbor of Klint. Just a beautiful place:

The backyard was originally going to have a salt water swimming pool, now it is a fun garden.

Out and About in Copenhagen

August 1st, 2016

After waking up I headed out to get some breakfast for the troops. I also got us a new simcard to so we’d be able to use my phone as a wireless hotspot for everyone else, super important for hunting Pokemon. We headed out to visit the shops along the walking streets in downtown Copenhagen and visited our favorite comic book shop.

After picking up some new manga and a new board game to challenge Thomas and Grace we headed back to the hotel to take a break.

We walked the block or two over to Tivoli and meet up with all the rest of the Dales, we had fun playing with Joshua and AJ on the lawns and enjoyed the gardens and rides. After a nice dinner we admired all the lights as we made our way through Tivoli back to our hotel.

Departures and Arrivals

July 29th, 2016

We left Berkeley and headed to the airport on BART.

Long time readers might notice how much less luggage we have now that the girls are much older. Seems weird but its true that the older the kids get the less luggage they seem to need. We’re nowhere near Richard’s mysterious ability to travel with just a tiny backpack. But we are definitely getting better.

We are definitely the “Better two hours early than a minute too late” kind of travelers. So we had plenty of time at the airport to grab a bite to eat and catch Pokemon. Flight went well, we all really liked the Norwegian Air’s ne w Boeing Dreamliners, the stronger composit fusilage allows them to keep the cabin pressure 50% higher than older planes. We definitely noticed the higher oxygen  and humidity that allows. The new larger windows were also a plus.

After our transfer in Stokholm we landed in Copenhagen and were meet at the airport by Knut and Nina. It took way too long for our bags to arrive but they all made it eventually. A quick trip by train and we walked over to our hotel, we’re staying just two blocks from Tivoli right in downtown Copenhagen for a couple of nights. It’s a great location and they are super small cabin type rooms. After cleaning off the travel grim we headed out with Karen’s cousin Signe to her apartment to say hi to Thomas and Grace.

A quick bite of “natmad”(night food) and we Glimmes walked back to our hotel to collapse in bed.

Getting Ready

July 26th, 2016

We’re all getting ready here. Mostly we do that by sleeping in, but there has been lots of planning and shopping going on. Also making sure that all the clothes people want to take are clean. Its going to be a great trip.
